Lying in the far western region of Nepal, the land of Dolpo is a restricted area and trekkers require a special trekking permit to make entry into this area. This huge area has Shey Phoksundo National Park covering 1,373 sq. km with full of flora and fauna. Trekking into this remote and agriculturally backward Lower Dolpo trekking area requires full board tented camping service with a camping crew. There are several routes open to visit Lower Dolpo trek area either from Pokhara, or Jumla.
We begin our trek from Juphal, after flying to Nepalgunj on the first day and to Juphal on second day. From Dunai, the district headquarters & check-post the trail route passes through the banks of Barbung Khola to Tarakote, known locally as Dzong for its hilltop fortress. Proceeding along the Tarap River through grassy pastures, ethnic villages and Buddhist monasteries, the highest point of the trek Numa La (5,190m) is reached, which offers a magnificent views of Mt. Dhaulagiri to the south and Tibetan mountain range with Kugung La and Khyung La Passes to the north. We find Blue Sheep, musk Deer, Ghoral, snow Leopard, Tahr and black Bear in the park. Ringmo is located beyond the Baga La (5,070m), a mountain pass encircled by large glaciers and rock cliffs. The first view of the lake’s shining turquoise-blue waters of Phoksundo (3600m) set in a cleft between rocks that rises 2,000m into the peaks of Kanjiroba is truly breathtaking. The descending trail meanders along Suli Gad river to Raha, the park entrance and finally to the hamlet of Juphal.
The local people inhabiting this isolated part of the world are still following ancient religion (Bon Po), culture and traditional farming. In summer, you will see the caravans of yaks and sheep run through this lower dolpa trek on a trade route through the Himalayas and allows the exchange of goods at the Trans Himalayan border with Tibet & Nepal.
Trekking to lower dolpa trek , As this is Nepal's one of the most demanding trek, we, therefore, recommend to attempt only for those who are truly experienced trekkers.
